Who We Are
We're a highly collaborative network focused on AI discourse in higher education.
The Asia-Europe for Artificial Intelligence (AE4AI) Network was established by the participants of the ASEF Higher Education Innovation Laboratory project series in October 2023 in Shanghai, China. Its Founding Members are 20 representatives from Asian and European higher education institutions—all alumni of the ASEFInnoLab programme.

The network was launched with a Joint Statement by its Founding Members which highlight areas of importance to the network and to address these areas through a peer-to-peer collaboration.

All subsequent alumni of the ASEFInnoLab are invited to join!

ASEFInnoLab4 and the AE4AI Joint Statement
The 4th ASEF Higher Education Innovation Laboratory (ASEFInnoLab4) took place in Shanghai, China from 23 to 28 October 2023 with the theme “Universities’ Role in Teaching Artificial Intelligence (AI) Skills and Entrepreneurship.” It gathered 20 outstanding academics, senior university administrators, and field experts who collaborated to discuss and find ways to address challenges concerning AI Governance, AI in Education, and AI for Sustainable Development.
They also joined and spoke at various Roundtable Discussions of the prestigious 2023 Shanghai Forum, an incredible event attended by 500 guests from various sectors and industries within China and abroad.
Dr Claudio RIVERA, Riga Business School, talks about the value of connections and having a common vision for universities when it comes to key developments, like the rise of AI.
Participants echo the call for international collaboration in AI and emphasise the key role of universities and the importance of dialogue in ensuring that technological development and innovation move towards collective human good.
A key outcome of ASEFInnoLab4 is the release of a Joint Statement, which launched the AE4AI Network with sets of action lines in three subthemes: AI Governance, AI in Education, and AI for Sustainable Development. Thematic working groups, helmed by Coordinators, were also created to direct the network's efforts in these areas.

The Secretariat
The Network is supported by the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF), an intergovernmental not-for-profit organisation which brings together the peoples of Asia and Europe to address common global challenges. Its Education Department (ASEFEdu) implements the ASEFInnoLab programme, one of two initiatives under its Higher Education portfolio.
