Prof (Dr.) Ram B. Ramachandran, an outstanding member of the AE4AI Network, has announced the release of a new volume titled The Handbook of Global Philosophies on AI Ethics: Toward Sustainable Futures, which he co-edited together with Prof. (Dr.) Naresh Singh.

The book, published under Routledge, features significant contributions from ASEFInnoLab alumni and experts: Prof. Ram, Prof. (Dr.) Dalma Lilla Dominek, an AE4AI Network member from 2024, and Prof. (Dr.) Alex Grech, who served as an expert moderator for the ASEFInnoLab 2020 batch. The book provides an exploration of the diverse perspectives shaping the future of artificial intelligence, specifically highlighting the influence of non-Western thinking.

Core Framework and Philosophical Scope

The handbook examines the potential impact of developing AI with the core values of global philosophies. It specifically references the wisdom of Ubuntu, the harmony of Confucian thought, and the Indian principle of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, which translates to "the world is one family."

This collection brings together global voices to envision AI systems that are fair, ethical, and inclusive. The text addresses critical issues including:

  • Bias and fairness

  • Privacy

  • Existential risks

  • Robust ethical guardrails

The work explores the influence of religion, culture, and social movements on AI’s application across several industries, such as finance, education, and the military.

Key Messages

  • Global Ethical Insights: An understanding of how non-Western traditions can redefine standard AI ethics to reflect the values of all humanity.

  • Cross-Sectoral Applications: Practical analysis of how cultural and religious perspectives shape AI use in finance, education, and national security.

  • Frameworks for Sustainability: Strategies for building AI systems that prioritise social wellbeing and inclusivity.

We are thrilled to see another contribution of the AE4AI Network to the AI policy research ecosystem, this time from a global perspective. For more information about Prof. (Dr.) Ram B. Ramachandran’s book, please visit the Routledge publishing website here.
